GED In Alaska

In Alaska, students looking to earn their high school equivalency diploma can take the GED test online or at one of Alaska’s official GED testing centers.

To register for the GED test, students must set up an account on the website GED.com.

The state of Alaska uses the computer-based GED exam for its testing program. The Alaska GED test offers persons who didn’t finish high school the chance to acquire an equivalent credential.

The Alaska GED® testing fee for taking the test at a test center is $144 for the complete exam ($36 per module).

Online testing will also set you back $36 per module ($144 in total), but you need to pass four GED Ready tests ($6.99 each) to qualify for online testing ($28 in total). Retesting is offered at discounted rates, but not when you take the GED test online.

The GED passing score is 145 points on each of the four GED subject tests.

There are four GED subject tests that cover the fields of

• Social Studies

The GED subject tests (modules) are individual tests that can be taken separately.

Alaska GED Eligibility Requirements

• In Alaska, you need to be at least 16 years old, but for applicants 16 and 17 years of age, additional strict requirements apply.
• Alaska has NO residency requirements.
• You cannot already hold a high school diploma and not attend any other school program.
• There’s no requirement in Alaska to partake in a prep course.
• You also don’t have to take the GED Ready® practice test prior to sitting for the real GED test, except when you sit for the exam online.

GED Passing Score

Scoring is done on a 100-200 scale: 100-144: below passing; 145-164: high school equivalency passing score; 165-174: college-ready score; 175-200: college-ready + credit score.

If you fail a subtest, there is no waiting period for your first two retests. When you’ve taken a subtest three times, you are required to wait at least 60 days before you can retake that subject test.

Your first two retakes for a subtest are offered at a discounted rate if you take them within a year. After that, regular fees apply. If you fail that subject test again, there will be two more retakes at a reduced rate. The $20 fee for testing will be waived, but there will still be a $10 test center fee for your retakes. Again, this does NOT apply to online testing.

Who Can Take the GED Exam?

You can only sit for the GED exam if you’re not already holding a secondary education degree, when you are not signed up for school, and if you’re at least 16 years of age.

For 16 & 17-year-olds, however, there are additional strict requirements. They must produce an official withdrawal statement from the Alaskan school they last attended and also permission in writing from a parent or guardian.

Make sure you become properly prepared. Community bookstores generally have booklets and other materials to become all set. When you think you are well prepared, take the GED exam (one test at a time if you like) and receive your GED diploma. You can take each one of the four subtests (modules) when you are sufficiently prepared.

To qualify for online proctored (OP) GED testing, students need to score in the “green” zone on the official GED Ready practice test.

Online preparation is also fine and actually a great option for people in remote areas or people who, for whatever reason, don’t get along in a regular class setting.

How to get a GED in Alaska

In Alaska, GED hopefuls need to pass the four subtests of the GED high school equivalency (HSE) exam to earn their high school equivalency diploma.

The GED exam is a fully computer-based exam, and you can register and pay for one subtest at a time.

What are the Alaska GED requirements?

In Alaska, GED test-takers need to be no younger than 16, though, for 16 and 17-year-olds, restrictions apply. They need, for example, permission from their school and hold parental consent. You are eligible if you don’t have a high school diploma or equivalent.

FREE GED Testing in Alaska

Periodically, Alaska provides funds to support Alaska’s GED test-takers who are signed up for the state’s Adult Education Programs. Funds are limited, so please check with Alaska’s Department of Labor and Workforce Development (907-465-2700) if or when these funds are available.

Under the program, Alaska purchases GED Vouchers and distributes these to Adult Education Programs during promotion periods. The Adult Education Programs will then provide the Vouchers to participating students so they can take one or more GED subtests for free.
