On this page, you can find all GED test locations and prep class sites in the Alpena area. Michigan uses two options for High School Equivalency testing: the HiSET and GED exams.
Both exams are offered online and at state-certified test centers. Learn more below about online GED and HiSET testing.
The assessments are for people who never graduated high school and give them the opportunity to earn an equivalent degree.
Both exams measure knowledge at a level similar to that of a graduating HS student.
There are four independent GED® modules (subtests) in
- Social Studies
- Language Arts
You may take one of the four GED subtests at a time. No need to complete the GED battery in one take.
The HiSET® exam has separate writing and reading tests, so five overall, that can also be taken separately.
HiSET testing can be done on paper or on a computer. The GED is fully computer-formatted.

Online GED and HiSET Testing Options
Until recently, taking the HiSET or GED exam via the Internet was not an option. Now, that has changed. You can learn more about the Online HiSET Exam <- here, and GED Testing Service introduced the Online GED Test as well.
The GED (General Education Development) program offers adults who never finished high school the chance to earn a diploma that is accepted in the same way as a standard high school diploma across the nation. The passing score on each individual GED subtest is 145, and scoring is measured on a 100-200 scale.
If you want to register for the GED exam, you need to do that online. Go to GED.com and create your account with MyGED. Here you can find all the information about scheduling your tests, how to pay, and so on. MyGED is the portal where you will be guided through the entire process of preparation, testing, school information, job options, and a lot more.
The HiSET passing score on each of the five modules is 8 (out of 20). Your total result must be in the 45-100 range, and your essay score must be at least 2 (out of a possible 6).
In Michigan, GED testers must be 18 years old or older, but 16 or 17-year-olds may also take the assessment if they have been formally withdrawn from school for at least 1 calendar year. However, this waiting period may be waived if the school district’s superintendent and a parent/guardian think it’s in the student’s best interest to do so or when it’s court-ordered.
The waiver must be signed by the student, the school district’s superintendent, and a parent or legal guardian. Participants in Michigan’s National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program who are 16 or older and not enrolled in high school may also take the exam upon completion of this program.
Applicants looking for induction into the Armed Forces and who are 17 years old may also sit for the assessment if they can produce a written request from a recruiting office stating the applicant meets all other requirements for induction except having a GED.
In Michigan, test-takers are not required to follow a GED prep course prior to testing, nor are they required to first attain satisfactory results on an official practice test.
