Listed here are all GED and HiSET prep sites and testing centers in the Altoona region. Pennsylvania uses the computer-formatted GED exam for High School Equivalency testing.

The state additionally welcomed the HiSET for this purpose, which is available on a computer and on paper.

The GED® and HiSET® exams are available online and at state-approved test centers.

The exams give adults who didn’t finish high school the opportunity to earn an equivalent credential.

Both exams measure an applicant’s knowledge and skills at a level that compares to that of graduating high school seniors.

The GED has four separate, independent tests measuring a student’s proficiency in these subject fields:

• Math
• Science
• English Language
• Social Studies

These subject tests can be taken one test at a time. There’s no requirement to write the entire GED battery in one take.

The HiSET has individual writing and reading tests (so five in total) that can be taken separately as well.

It used to be that online High School Equivalency (HSE) testing was not an option, but this has changed now with the arrival of both online GED and HiSET options. Check below for more information.

Introducing Online GED & HiSET Tests

Pennsylvania will award the state’s Commonwealth Secondary School Diploma (CSSD) to applicants who take the GED or HiSET exam successfully. Both the GED and HiSET had to be taken personally at one of the state’s official testing centers. However, that’s now changed with the introduction of online proctored (OP) GED and HiSET assessments.

AASD Adult Education

Through the years, the Altoona Area School District (AASD) has helped numerous adults achieve their career and/or educational goals. The AASD’s Community Education Center was set up in 1969, and for more than 50 years, the Center has offered adult education programs and opportunities to the residents of Blair County.

The education programs serve adult learners through funds provided by Pennsylvania’s Department of Education. AASD’s programs and free education classes provide great support for adult learners looking to enhance their adult basic education (ABE) skills, earn a GED, and prepare for post-secondary education in college or university.

AASD’s Adult Education programs are available at The ArtsAltoona Center (2212 6th Ave, Altoona). All study materials and education programs are offered to the students at no charge whatsoever.

Participants in the Adult Education Program will develop their employment skills, improve their math, writing, and reading skills, work toward their GED, get ready for post-secondary education in college or university, and get started on a rewarding career path.

GED Age Requirements

Pennsylvania requires testers to be 16 years old or older. Candidates 16 or 17 are required to submit an Age Waiver from Pennsylvania’s Department of Education. Candidates must additionally submit an official request from a college admissions office, employer, director of an institution, or military recruiting office stating that the applicant requires a GED.

In Pennsylvania, GED hopefuls are required to be state residents. Upon taking (one of the) four GED modular exams at a test center, applicants must indicate state residency with a current driver’s license or some other proof of state residency.

In Pennsylvania, there’s no formal requirement for GED testers first to follow a preparatory program, but becoming well-prepared is the key to success on the very challenging GED exam.

There are hardly any students who would be able to pass the HiSET or modules without any form of preparation. Applicants are also not required first to reach sufficient scores on the official GED practice assessment, the GED Ready® test, except when taking the exam online.
