Both exams can be taken online or at state-designated test centers. Learn more about online GED and HiSET testing below. The Illinois HSE (high school equivalency) program offers adults without a high school diploma the chance to earn an equivalent degree.

The GED® exam has four separate modules (subtests) that can be taken one at a time.

The GED testing fields are

  • Social Studies
  • Language Arts
  • Math
  • Science

The HiSET® exam includes individual reading and writing tests, so five overall that can also be taken separately.

In Illinois, you additionally need to pass the state’s Constitution Test. Additionally, the Illinois Community College Board announced they will cover the full cost of GED testing now for successful testers. Upon registration, use the code ILSAVE.

Online GED and HiSET Exams

Taking the HiSET or GED online was, until recently, not possible. It just wasn’t offered online. If you wanted to earn your Illinois High School Equivalency diploma, you had to come to one of the state’s official testing sites.

That has changed, though. The GED and HiSET have now introduced online proctored test versions. For more information, check out these articles: ‘Online proctored GED testing’ and for HiSET information, check out ‘Online proctored HiSET testing.’
