You can take one (or more) of the GED subtest (module) when you think you are ready to do so. No need to sit for the entire GED battery in one take.
It used to be that GED testing could be exclusively done at state-designated testing centers. There was no online GED testing option, but this has now changed with the arrival of an online proctored GED test. More information can be found at the bottom of this page.

Online GED Testing
Until recently, GED testing over the Internet was not available. To acquire your GED diploma, your personal appearance was needed at one of Minnesota’s official GED testing centers, where you had to sit for the four GED subtests face-to-face.
