It doesn’t matter when you left school.

The HiSET® and GED® tests may be taken online or at one of California’s state-approved testing facilities. Read more below.

The computer-based GED exam contains four separate modules (subtests) in Science, Literacy, Math, and Social Studies.

California also welcomed the HiSET exam that is offered both on-computer and on-paper.

The HiSET exam includes separate writing and reading tests, so five in total.

The GED modules may be completed individually and this also counts for the HiSET subtests.

Online GED, HiSET testing

The HiSET and GED tests can now be dealt with online as well. It used to be that you had to come to a state-designated testing center if you wanted to obtain your high school equivalency diploma and take the test in person.

Recent developments have moved the GED and HiSET exams rapidly toward a proctored, online testing version, though. You can learn more about the online HiSET exam, and for more information about the online GED test, <- check here.

Please bear in mind that websites that sell online GED documents are fraudulent and run by con artists who just try to steal your hard-earned money. If you wish to learn if you qualify for the HSE (high school equivalency) program, check out this page: GED testing in California.

California GED Practice test

GED and HiSET

The state of California not only offers the GED test (entirely computer-formatted and including the four test subjects of Science, Social Studies, Math, and Language Arts), but the state also presents an alternative assessment system to its residents to acquire the High School Equivalency Diploma: the HiSET exam.

This alternative exam has two literacy sections (reading and writing) and is offered in both computer- and paper versions. Furthermore, this method is slightly cheaper than the GED exam. Not all testing centers administer both of the options so, please check with a testing site near you to learn which exam(s) they use!
