In New Jersey, both tests must be taken on a computer. The days of paper-based testing are over.

The (high school equivalency test gives adults who left high school without a diploma the chance to earn an equivalent degree.

Testing occurs at a level comparable to that of graduating high school students.

GED® testing involves four independent subtests assessing a candidate’s knowledge of

  • Math
  • Science
  • Social Studies
  • English Language

You can write these modules (separate sub-exams) one at a time and in any order.

The HiSET® test comes with five subtests (individual reading and writing tests) that may also be taken independently.

In the past, there was no option to take the HiSET or GED online. That has now changed with the launch of online GED and HiSET testing options. Learn more below at the bottom of this post.

Check out this page: “The New Jersey GED Test” if you want to read all about New Jersey HiSET and GED fees, passing scores, or eligibility criteria.
