The exams give people who never graduated from high school one more shot at securing an equivalent degree.

The HiSET® and GED® tests can be taken online or at an official California test center. More information can be found at the bottom of this page.

Both tests assess knowledge at a level similar to what may be expected of graduating high school students. The HiSET exam is offered in both a paper and computer-based version, while the GED is entirely computerized.

The GED test contains four separate subject tests, or modules, in these subject fields:

  • English Language Arts
  • Math
  • Science
  • Social Studies

The HiSET exam contains separate reading and writing subtests, so five in total.

Online GED and HiSET Testing

The health crisis moved GED and HiSET testing rapidly into an online proctored testing option. To qualify for taking the GED test online, candidates must score in the “green zone” on the official GED Ready® practice test. Check ‘The Online GED Test’ for more information on the online GED test.

If you want to read more about the “HiSET-At-Home” online option, check out this post: ‘Online HiSET Testing Introduced.’

The GED Exam

The GED test is developed for adults who did not finish high school, and passing the exam will result in the equivalent of a high school degree. The former GED exam version was revamped slightly at the beginning of the century to get in line with standards for career and college readiness, and the exam was already more demanding, particularly in the subject field of mathematics.

GED Passing Score

The entire GED exam must be completed ‘digitally’ (on a computer, also writing essays), and scoring is as follows: you must at least have 145 points on each of the four subject areas. Scoring occurs on a 100-200 scale. There are four subtests; averaging is not possible, so your overall score must be at least 580.

  • Scores in the 145-164 range indicate high school equivalency
  • 165-174 scores indicate college readiness
  • 175-200 scores will additionally result in up to ten college credits, depending on the subject and the school

The HiSET exam is scored on a 0-20 scale, and the passing score on each subtest is 8. Your overall score must be in the 45-100 range, and your essay must have at least a score of 2 out of 6.

To take the GED exam, students must have developed keyboarding skills and need to have more knowledge in mathematics. The entire test has become more difficult to become in line with Common Core standards. On the other hand, there’s almost no job anymore out there that doesn’t require basic knowledge of computers and keyboarding skills.
