HiSET® and GED® testing can be done both online and at official North Carolina test centers.
The HiSET is available both on paper and on a computer, whereas the GED is exclusively offered on a computer.
The exams give adults who could not complete their HS education the chance to secure an equivalent degree.
The GED exam includes four individual subtests (or modules). You have the option to sit for one of the four modules at a time.

These four GED subtests cover the academic subjects of
- Social Studies
- Science
- Language Arts
- Math
The HiSET includes five tests (Literacy has individual writing and reading tests) that may also be taken separately.
In the past, both options were only administered at state-certified test centers. Recently, however, that has changed with the launch of online HiSET and GED testing options.

Online HiSET and GED Tests
In the past, the GED and HiSET exams were never offered online. If you were looking to secure your North Carolina HSE degree, your personal appearance at an official North Carolina HSE testing center was required.

Passing Scores
- GED passing score: 145 on a 100-200 scale.
- 145-164: High School Equivalency
- 165-174: College-ready
- 175-200: College-ready Plus credits
HiSET passing score: 8 (out of 20). Overall minimum score: 45; HiSET essay minimum score: 2 (out of 6).

GED Testing
GED.com is the GED organization’s website, and here, you can find all sorts of GED-related information. This is the place to create your account at MyGED for registration and scheduling your tests and learn as well everything about the employment market, job developments, and college profiles. This is also the location to register and schedule your tests.
There can be many reasons why you left high school before graduation: maybe you needed to help your family through difficult times, maybe you felt you just didn’t “fit in,” or maybe you thought you would never need a secondary education degree (HS diploma or HSE certificate). But now you don’t have it; you realize you may want it and how important a high school diploma is.
Every year, more than half a million adults pass the GED or HiSET test, and you could become one of them. For most jobs, some basic understanding of keyboarding and computer skills is now required, so training these skills has become part of the exams. Just like before, preparation is key to success; the North Carolina HSE examination is not something you can prepare for overnight.
Schedule the GED Test
Anyone who’s 18 years or older can take the GED exam if they meet North Carolina’s criteria. Applicants 16 and 17 years of age, however, can take the GED tests only if they have obtained approval from their school’s College & Career Readiness department. Underage test-takers must complete a “Minor Student Application,” and when they are approved, they will be able to schedule their tests.
To schedule a GED testing appointment, students must create an account on the website GED.com/MyGED. This website offers lots of information about college programs, the job market, high-in-demand sectors, how to best prepare for the GED exams, and a lot more. This is also the place to schedule and pay for your exams. You can take, and pay for, the four exams one at a time.
