The GED® exam provides adults who never completed high school with the chance to earn an equivalent credential.

Applicants have to pass four individual subtests in Social Studies, Science, Math, and Literacy.

The tests can be taken separately. You are not required to sit for the entire GED battery in one testing session.

The GED test is only available in a computer-based format.

It used to be that you had to come to a state-designated Virginia GED testing site and sit for the GED exam in person. There was no online testing option.

Introducing the online GED exam

In the past, there was never the option to sit for the GED test online. If you wanted to acquire the Virginia GED diploma, your personal appearance at one of the state’s official GED testing centers was required.

This has now changed as we witnessed the introduction of a new GED testing format, the online proctored GED test. So if you qualify, you are allowed to take the four GED subtests online from the comfort of your own home. An online proctor will oversee your testing process and check if you do it all in line with the regulations. To learn more, go to ‘Introducing the online GED test.’
