Listed here are all GED (in Iowa: HiSET) classes and testing facilities in the Dubuque region. In Iowa, you’ll have to pass the HiSET exam to acquire a high school equivalency degree.
You can sit for the HiSET exam both online and at state-certified test centers.
The exam offers adults who never graduated high school the chance to earn an equivalent degree.
Testing is done at a level that is comparable to what high school students must know upon graduation.
There are five HiSET® tests in the fields of math, science, language writing, language reading, and social studies.
HiSET testing is possible on a computer and on paper.
Until recently, HiSET testing, like with the GED®, had to be done at state-designated Iowa testing sites. There was no online HiSET testing option.
The introduction of the online HiSET-At-Home exam, however, has changed all of that. Read more below.
The diploma that you’ll receive upon successful completion of the Iowa HiSET exam is, across the nation, accepted just like a conventional high school diploma.

Online HiSET-At-Home introduced
In the past, the HiSET exam was not available over the internet. For earning a high school equivalency (HSE) diploma, you had to report personally to one of Iowa’s state-designated testing sites.
Now, with the arrival of the HiSET-At-Home test-taking option, that had changed. An online proctor guides you through the online testing process and sees if you are doing everything in line with regulations. Learn more here: Introducing the online HiSET-At-Home Exam.
The HiSET exam
Iowa stopped using the GED for HSE (High school Equivalency) testing and switched to the HiSET exam. The price of the GED skyrocketed, and the GED was only available in a computer-based format. Reasons enough for Iowa, just like many other states, to change to an alternative option. Iowa chose to use the HiSET exam.
For more detailed information about HiSET testing in Iowa (such as prices, prep options, qualification criteria, scoring system, registration, and so on), visit GED in Iowa.
For who is the HSE exam?
The HSE (High School Equivalency) exam is for adults who, for whatever reason, never completed high school. The diploma that will be received after successful completion of the five HiSET tests is equivalent to a regular high school diploma. The diploma is all across America accepted by state and federal authorities, academic institutions, and employers.
Each of the five HiSET tests is measured on a 1-20 scale, and the minimally required result is 8. Your overall score must be no less than 45, and the Language writing section (Essay) must have a score of at least 2.
Please note that online-obtained documents are worthless and will definitely not be accepted by employers or institutions of higher education.
