The HiSET and GED exams are available in an online format and at state-designated HSE testing centers. Read more below.

The assessments provide persons who didn’t graduate high school another opportunity to secure an equivalent diploma. Testing takes place at a level that compares to that of graduating high school students.

GED® testing is exclusively done on a computer, while the HiSET® can be taken both on a computer and on paper.

The GED has four individual subtests that cover the subject of

  • English Language Arts
  • Mathematics
  • Science, including Physics and Chemistry
  • Social Studies, including Biology and Geography

These four sub-exams can be taken separately and in any order.

Online GED and HiSET Testing

The GED and HiSET exams are now also offered in an online format. GED hopefuls must first score “green” on the GED Ready® practice test. For more information about the online GED test, check out this page.

To learn all about the online proctored HiSET exam, check out the page Online HiSET Test-At-Home.

GED and HiSET

The GED is scored on a 100-200 scale, and the passing score on each subtest is 145. So, your overall score must be at least 580 to pass the GED test.

In California, residents can also choose to take the HiSET exam to acquire their high school equivalency diploma. This alternative exam is still offered in both paper and computer formats and is cheaper than the now fully ‘digitalized’ GED exam.

State GED test centers have the freedom to decide which of the assessment programs they administer, so be wise and contact a testing center near you for possibilities.

To be successful at the HiSET, your minimum score on each subtest needs to be 8 (out of 20), the essay score between 2 and 6, and your overall score no less than 45 points, excluding your essay.
