The exams offer persons who never graduated high school one more shot at earning an equivalent diploma. Both tests measure elementary knowledge and skills at a level comparable to that of graduating high school students.
The GED® exam is fully computerized, while the HiSET® comes with paper-based and computer-formatted versions.
The GED has four separate subtests in
- Language Arts
- Social Studies
- Mathematics
- Science
You may write these sub-exams one or more at a time and in your desired order.
The HiSET has individual writing and reading tests, so five overall, that can be taken separately, too.
In Illinois, students must additionally pass a Constitution test to receive their High School Diploma.
Illinois reduced the cost of GED testing; the GED or HiSET diploma is now called an Illinois high school diploma.

Introducing Online GED and HiSET Testing
Until quite recently, taking the HiSET or GED exam online was not possible. It was just not available. To earn a high school equivalency diploma, you were required to appear at one of Illinois’ state-designated test centers.
Well, that has changed! The HiSET and GED exams have introduced online versions as well that use an online proctor. You can read more here: ‘The online GED test,’ and more information about the HiSET exam is found here -> ‘The HiSET-exam-at-home.’
