This article contains a complete listing of GED prep facilities and testing sites in the Elizabeth City area. North Carolina is using the fully computer-formatted GED for its high school equivalency testing program.
The state additionally implemented an alternative exam, the HiSET, for this purpose.
The HiSET® and GED® exams are available both online and at state-certified NC test centers. To learn more about online GED and HiSET testing, check the bottom of this page.
The exams give persons who never completed high school the possibility to earn an equivalent credential.
The GED test includes four individual modules (subtests) assessing a student’s skills and knowledge in these subjects:
- Social Studies
- Language Literacy
You have the option to take one or more of the four GED subtests at a time.
The HiSET has five modular subtests, as the Literacy section has separate reading and writing tests. These sub-exams may be taken individually as well.
The GED is entirely computerized, whereas the HiSET is available in both paper-based and computerized formats.
Check out “The GED Exam In North Carolina” to learn more about qualification requirements, HiSET and GED testing fees, or scoring systems.

If you want to find out if you qualify for the HSE program, go to this page: GED testing in North Carolina.
Online Proctored HiSET and GED Testing
The GED and HiSET tests were never offered over the Internet. If you wanted to secure a North Carolina HSE (High School Equivalency) diploma, your personal appearance at one of North Carolina’s official HSE testing sites was required.
Well, with the recent introduction of online proctored HiSET and GED tests, all of this has changed. A proctor will see that you’ll be doing everything in accordance with the regulations. You can read more about online GED testing here: Welcoming the online GED test, and for information about the online HiSET exam, go to Welcoming the online HiSET test.
GED and HiSET
Most of the 58 North Carolina community colleges have introduced both options. The GED is totally computer-based, and the HiSET is offered in both a paper-based and a computer-formatted version and is cheaper than the GED test.
Who is the GED For?
North Carolina’s High School Equivalency program is designed for students who test at or above the 9th-grade level in reading and math but who never earned their high school diplomas.
At the above-listed sites, learners can receive instruction to prepare them for successfully taking and passing North Carolina’s GED or HiSET test. The minimum required age for testing is 18, but minors ages 16 and 17 may also qualify. To qualify, minors must have a parent or legal guardian complete a “Minor Application for Admission” form.
North Carolina doesn’t require GED applicants to be state residents, but they need to take and pass their last GED subtest in North Carolina if they want to receive the North Carolina diploma.
