The HiSET® and GED® tests can be taken both online and at California’s state-approved testing sites. Read more below.
The exams offer adults who could not complete their HS education the chance to acquire an equivalent credential.
The GED exam has four independent modules, or subtests, that assess a candidate’s skills and knowledge in
- Reasoning through Language Arts (150 minutes)
- Mathematical Reasoning (115 minutes)
- Social Studies (70 minutes)
- Science (90 minutes)
The GED allows test takers to take one of the subject tests (modules) at a time.
The HiSET exam is administered through five tests. The Language Arts section is split up into reading and writing tests.

Online GED and HiSET Testing
The HiSET and GED exams are now available in an online format as well. It used to be that if you wanted to earn your California HSE diploma, you had to show up in person at one of California’s official testing centers. That now had changed.
To learn more about the online “HiSET-At-Home” option, check out this page: The Online HiSET Test. GED testers wanting to take the four GED subtests online first need to score “green” on the GED Ready® practice test. Check here for more information about -> the Online GED exam.
Four GED Tests
As said before, the GED exam comprises four independent subject tests covering Math, Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies.
These subtests can be completed one at a time and in your preferred order. HiSET testing is done through five tests that may also be taken separately.
California Free GED Practice TestThe HiSET Literacy section has separate tests in Language Writing and Language Reading. The HiSET exam will require around 7.5 hours to complete.
In California, each GED subject test (module) costs $41 (so $164 for the entire GED battery), and this applies to both online and on-site testing. The HiSET subtests are slightly cheaper.
GED Scoring
Your GED scores are calibrated on a scale running from 100 to 200. On each sub-exam, the minimum required score is 145. There are four GED scoring ranges:
- 100-144 is the GED below-passing score
- 145-164 is the GED high school equivalency (HSE) score
- 165-174 is the GED college-ready score
- 175-200 is the GED college ready + college credits score
Your HiSET subtests are calibrated on a 0 to 20 score. On each sub-exam, the minimum score is 8. Overall, you must reach scores in the 45-100 range, and your essay must have at least a 2 out of 6 score.
