The HiSET® and GED® tests are now available online as well for qualifying candidates. Read more below.

The exams are for individuals who never finished high school and provide one more chance to earn an equivalent degree.

The GED and HiSET exams measure knowledge in basic subjects at a level that high school students must command upon graduation.

The GED is fully computer-based and comes with four subtests (modules) that need to be completed separately.

The GED subtests are in Math, Literacy, Science, and Social Studies.

We recommend the Online GED Program
from Onsego.

It’s Simple, Fast & Easy.

The HiSET is offered in both paper-based and computer-formatted versions and has five subtests that are modular as well.

The HiSET exam comes with two separate Literacy tests, one in writing and one in reading.

Not all testing sites administer both options so get properly informed!

GED California Sample Practice Test

Online GED or HiSET testing

The GED and HiSET exams can now be completed online as well. In the past, to acquire your HSE diploma, you had to appear at one of California’s testing centers and sit for the exam in person. That has changed.

If you want to learn more about the HiSET-at-Home online option, check out this article: The Online HiSET Test. If students want to qualify for online GED testing, they must first score “green” on the GED Ready® practice test. You can learn more here: The online proctored GED test.

GED cost

In California, the GED program is open to adult learners 18 and older. When you are 16 or 17, you may qualify, but there are strict regulations.

You must, for example, be officially withdrawn from school requirements, and you must have parental consent, so contact a GED center near you. You won’t receive your diploma until your 18th birthday.

The GED exam price tag is $140 for the entire battery, but you can take (and pay for) 1 test at a time when you are ready ($35). The HiSET exam is a bit cheaper. You must be a California resident, cannot already have a secondary degree, and cannot be registered for any other school program.

GED and HiSET

Besides the GED exam offers California also an alternative method to assess its residents’ high school equivalency. California residents can additionally sit for the HiSET alternative.

The HiSET exam offers HSE testing on a computer and paper and contains five testing subjects as literacy is split up into a section reading and a section writing. The GED has four subtests and is fully computer-formatted.

By offering two testing options, California hopes to help more students that left high school without a diploma to get back to school to earn their secondary credential, and consequently will have better job options and can continue their academic education.
