The four GED tests are timed tests, and many students feel they could have done better if only they had more time. So, learning how to be productive under time pressure really helps.

Four GED Modules

The GED exam is available in an online version, the Online Proctored (OP) GED test, but can also be taken at one of Washington’s state-designated GED test centers.

To qualify for the online proctored GED test, candidates must attain scores in the “green” (likely to pass) range of the official GED practice test, the GED Ready® Test.

The GED exam is computer-based. Paper-based testing is not possible, except for candidates with a disability that prevents them from taking the exam on a computer.

GED Passing Score

There’s no need to sit for the entire GED exam all at once. The four subtests are individual modules that you can sit for one at a time.

Across North America, the GED diploma is accepted just like a conventional high school credential by employers, government organizations, universities, and colleges.

To pass the four GED subtests and earn your Washington State High School Equivalency (HSE) Diploma, you need to reach a score of at least 145 on each subtest.

Averaging is not possible, so you’ll have to get to this score on EACH test. This means your total score cannot be less than 580 across the board.

Who Qualifies?

The GED exam is for adult learners who could not complete their high school curriculum. Candidates must not already have a secondary education degree and not be enrolled in some other school program.

The minimum required age in Washington is 19 years old, though 16, 17, and 18-year-old students may qualify as well if they hold parental permission and are officially taken out of high school. For more information, please contact your school district.

Is the Washington State GED test multiple-choice?

Many questions on the GED test are in the multiple-choice format, but there are also questions in different formats. You can also see fill-in-the-blank, short-answer, and draggable answer options.

Additionally, all GED testers will have to write a 5 to 6-paragraph-long essay, the so-called GED Extended Response.

Do I need to take the GED Ready test before the GED test in Washington?

No. Washington State doesn’t require GED applicants to first take part in a GED prep course or attain sufficient results on the official GED Ready® Practice Test.

The GED test is a challenging exam. So, becoming optimally prepared is the key to success. The passing score is at such a level that 40% of all HS graduates could not pass the GED exam on their first try.

What is the GED test cost in Washington?

The Washington State GED cost is $144 for the full GED test battery. You can, however, register for, pay for, and sit for the four subtests one at a time if you wish. The subtests are $36 each when taken at a test center and also $36 each when taken online.

What is the GED passing score in Washington State?

The GED exam requires test-takers to attain at least a score of 145 on EACH of the four subtests. The scores are calibrated on a 100-200 scale, and there is no averaging. This score must be reached on all subtests.

Is the Washington GED test hard?

GED testing is serious business, and the exam is quite rigorous. The four independent exams are timed tests, and many students say that if only they would have had more time, they would have reached better scores.

Then again, there are also talented students who need practically no time at all to pass the four tests, and there are students that need much longer to reach passing scores on all GED subtests.
