The state also welcomed the alternative HiSET exam for that purpose. The HiSET and GED exams can be taken in an online format and at official NC testing facilities.

Both exams assess general knowledge at a level comparable to that of graduating high school students.

The GED is exclusively administered on a computer, whereas the HiSET exam is available in paper-based and computerized versions.

There are four individual GED subtests covering the academic fields of

• English Language Literacy
• Social Studies
• Math
• Science

You may write these independent modules one at a time and in your desired order.

The HiSET exam has separate writing and reading subtests, so five overall. These tests can be taken separately as well.

These classes are available at no cost, thanks to a $50,000 Library Services and Technology Act Grant. Introducing the Online HiSET and GED Exams

Taking the GED or HiSET exam over the Internet was, until recently, not possible. If you were looking to get hold of your North Carolina HSE diploma, you were required to come to one of the state’s designated testing centers.

However, there have been some interesting developments, such as the introduction of online formats for the HiSET and GED tests.
