The exams offer adults who couldn’t finish high school the opportunity to earn an equivalent credential. Both exams measure the level of academic knowledge in comparison to that of graduating HS graduates.
The HiSET® exam is offered on paper and on a computer, whereas the GED® is only available on a computer.
The GED exam comes with four separate subtests (independent modules) covering:
- Language Arts
- Mathematics
- Science (incl. Physics and Chemistry)
- Social studies (incl. Geography and Biology)
You can take one of the four GED subtests at a time and in the order of your preference.
The HiSET exam includes five subtests (individual writing and reading tests) that can be taken separately, too.

Online GED and HiSET Testing
Today, you can complete the HiSET and GED exams online as well. In the past, if you wanted to earn your HSE diploma, you had to show up at one of California’s official testing centers, but that has changed.
The HiSET and GED tests can now also be taken in an online proctored format. An online proctor will check if all goes in line with the regulations. To learn more about the “HiSET-at-Home” online test, check out this page -> The Online HiSET Exam.
If students want to qualify for online GED testing, they’ll first have to score in the “green zone” on the official GED Ready® practice test. To learn more, check out this page -> The Online GED Test.
GED and HiSET
So California offers two assessments for high school equivalency testing. Besides the GED (General Education Development) exam, there is the option to take the HiSET (High School Equivalency Test) exam, developed by Educational Testing Service (ETS) and now owned by PSI. The HiSET exam is available in both computer-based and paper-based formats.
The HiSET exam has two literacy sections (reading and writing are separate), so five tests in total. Test centers can decide which of the options they will use.
The Four GED Tests
The GED exam is no longer considered a finish line for adults but much more a stepping stone towards higher education and better jobs with higher earnings. The GED exam continues to offer adults the chance to earn their high school credentials, yet it goes much further and also measures applicants’ readiness skills for career and college.
The candidates’ fundamental knowledge and skills are examined via four tests on the subject matters of literacy, math, science, and social studies.
GED graduates are tested in a way that examines their competencies in relation to students who have finished high school in a conventional way. The tests are in these subjects: Reasoning through Language Arts (Literacy), Social Studies, Mathematical Reasoning (Math), and Science.
