The HiSET® and GED® exams are offered both in online formats and at official test centers.

The computer-based GED exam includes four independent modules (subtests) in Math, Social Studies, Literacy, and Science.

You have the option to complete the entire GED battery one subtest at a time. The HiSET is also modular.

The HiSET exam has five subtests (separate reading and writing tests) and is offered both on paper and on a computer.

In earlier days, online GED or HiSET testing was no option. You were required to come to a state-designated testing site and sit for the tests in person.

Introducing an online HiSET and GED test

In the past, online HiSET or GED testing had never been possible. If you were looking to secure a North Carolina high school equivalency credential, you had to show up at an official test center.

Well, the recent arrival of online GED and HiSET testing options has changed this. To learn more about the recently introduced online GED test-taking option, go to Welcoming the online GED test, and to read more about the online HiSET exam option, go to Introducing the online HiSET exam.

The four GED tests

These are the four testing subject areas that are included in the GED (General Education Development) exam: Science, Social Studies, Math, and Literacy. There is no need of remembering many definitions, details, or facts to pass the test. You just have to prove your ability to think analytically and critically about various topics.

The minimum requirement is a 9th-grade reading level, which means you should be able to read and understand letters, forms, and newsletters. In addition to this, you should be able to do fundamental mathematical problems via addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

GED preparation & cost

The secret to passing these tests is to develop strong thinking and reading skills. Thus it is beneficial to you if you do some decent preparation for the GED test. This page contains a list of the GED classes available in your community. The latest adjustments made the GED exam meet the Common Core Standards. The GED exam costs $80 in North Carolina or $20 per individual test. The HiSET exam is priced differently.
