The four modular, independent GED sub-exams cover the academic subject areas of

  • Reasoning through Language Arts
  • Mathematical Reasoning
  • Social Studies
  • Science

The HiSET exam has separate writing and reading sub-exams, so five in total. The GED and HiSET sub-exams can be taken individually and in any desired order.

GED and HiSET testing can be done online and at state-certified test centers. To register for the GED Indiana test, candidates must set up an account on the website GED.com. For the HiSET exam, creating an account at hiset.org is required.

The cost of the HiSET (for all 5 subtests) is $52, but testing centers can (and will) charge administrative fees on top of that, including a $10 administrative fee for retesting, so the overall cost will be between $105 and $115.

The GED Indiana test has four independent subtests that cost $30 each ($120 in total) at an Indiana test center. When taken online, the sub-exams are $36 each ($144 overall), but you’ll also need to attain passing scores on four GED Ready tests to qualify for online testing, so that’ll be an additional $28.

Most states raised the GED testing fee for on-site testing to the same level as online testing, but Indiana did not.

FAQ about GED in Indiana

How to get a GED in Indiana?

Indiana is using both the GED and HiSET for high school equivalency (HSE) testing. To earn your HSE (high school equivalency) diploma in Indiana, you need to pass four GED or five HiSET tests. The HiSET subtests cover Math, Writing, Reading, Science, and Social Studies. GED testing includes four sub-exams since reading and writing were combined. GED testing is computer-based, while the HiSET exam can be taken on paper or a computer.

What are the Indiana GED testing requirements?

The GED and HiSET exams are for adults who don’t hold a high school diploma. Indiana requires testers to be at least 16 years old. 16 and 17-year-olds, however, must meet additional strict requirements. There’s no need to first take a practice test when writing the exam at a test center, but in Indiana, state residency is required.

What is the GED cost in Indiana?

The GED exam costs $30 per subtest when written at a test center. Online testing costs $36 per subtest. Take into account, however, that to be eligible for online testing, you first need to attain passing scores on four GED Ready tests, a $28 additional overall cost. As one of just a few states, Indiana kept the price of on-site GED testing at $30.

In Indiana, the HiSET exam costs $90-$115 for the entire exam, but you have the freedom to take (and pay for) the five subtests (modules) one or more at a time, like the GED subtests.
