The exams give persons who didn’t graduate high school the opportunity to acquire an equivalent credential.

Testing occurs at a level that’s comparable to that of graduating HS students.

The GED® includes four independent subtests that measure a candidate’s knowledge and skills in the academic subject fields of:

  • Social Studies
  • Math
  • Science
  • Language

These sub-exams are independent modules that may be completed separately in the desired order.

The HiSET® has separate reading and writing tests (so five overall) that can also be taken individually.

Online Proctored GED and HiSET Exams

The HiSET and GED exams are now also available in an online proctored format. It used to be that if you wanted to earn the HSE diploma, your personal appearance at one of California’s testing centers was required. Fortunately, that has changed.

You can read more about the online HiSET exam here -> ‘The Online HiSET Test. An online proctor will oversee if it all occurs in accordance with some pretty strict regulations.

Students looking to take the four GED subtests online will first have to attain “green” scores on the GED Ready® practice test. You can learn more here -> ‘The Online GED Test.

The GED exam meets up with new realities on the work floor and in colleges. When students earn their GED credential, it now again indicates that they have accomplished something that’s needed in the contemporary workplace and university.

GED, HiSET Passing Scores

The GED passing score on each test is 145 on a scale of 100 to 200.

  • Below passing score = 100 – 144
  • High school equivalency passing score =  144-164
  • College-ready passing score = 165-174
  • College-ready + college credit passing score =  175-200

The GED exam has implemented what employers and colleges are expecting from applicants. You will be given these time frames for the content fields of the totally computer-based GED test:

  • Mathematics: 1 hour and 55 minutes
  • Language Arts: 2 hours and 35 minutes
  • Science: 1 hour and 30 minutes
  • Social Studies: 1 hour and 10 minutes

On the HiSET exam, you must reach at least an 8-score on each of the five subtests, your overall score needs to be no less than 45, and your essay must have at least a score of 2 (out of 6).
