It doesn’t matter when you left school
The exams offer adults who quit high school prematurely the chance to secure an equivalent credential. The GED is fully computerized and contains four separate modules assessing an applicant’s proficiency in these academic subjects:
- Reasoning through Language Arts
- Mathematical Reasoning
- Social Studies, including Geography and Biology
- Science, including Physics and Chemistry
You can sit for the four GED subtests (or modules) one at a time and in the order you wish.
The HiSET exam has separate reading and writing tests, so five tests in total, that can be taken separately as well.

Proctored Online GED and HiSET
The HiSET and GED exams are both available in an online format as well. Until recently, if you wanted to earn your HSE diploma, you were required to sit for the tests at an official California testing center. Online testing was simply not possible.
Now, that has changed as the HiSET and GED exams are offered in an online, proctored version as well. An online proctor will oversee your activities to check if everything goes according to the rules and regulations.
