The HiSET exam is offered in both paper-based and computerized formats, while the GED is available only in a computer-based format.

The HiSET has five subtests in these academic subject fields:

Louisiana GED Requirements

  • In Louisiana, test-takers must be 19 years old to qualify without any restrictions.
  • 16, 17, and 18-year-olds may qualify as well, however, if they meet specific criteria (read more below).
  • There is no need to be a Louisiana resident.
  • Test-takers must first pass the official HiSET practice test or the GED Ready practice test.
  • Applicants cannot already have a secondary degree and not attend any other education program.

Underage test-takers (16–18) must provide, among other requirements, the following documentation if they want to be eligible to take the GED or HiSET test: Enrollment in a WorkReady U program; enrollment in an official Louisiana “Options” K-12 program with GED or HiSET testing authorization; and have sufficient results (Prepared or Well-Prepared) on the HiSET Official Practice Test (OPT) or GED Ready test for Educators administered by WorkReady U literacy program.

So, underage testers must enroll in the state’s official Adult Education Program and take free classes until they are ready to sit for the exam. They will need documentation from the school system that they have officially withdrawn.

HiSET testing cost in Louisiana: $95 for all 5 tests (paper-based) or $83.75 (computer-based).
Additionally, a $10 state fee is due upon registration for the first subtest. This fee is valid for one year. You receive two retests per subject test at a reduced fee ($6.99 for the test center per subtest).

The Louisiana GED exam costs $36 per module, regardless of whether you take the exam online or on-site. That’s $144 for the full GED battery, but you can register and pay for the four GED modules one at a time if you wish.

How to Start with GED Preparation

The HSE (High School Equivalency) program is not for everybody. If you finished high school or are engaged in another school program, you do not qualify. Contact a testing center close to you and find out if you qualify and about other regulations.

Be fully prepared when you show up for the GED or HiSET test. Local bookstores and libraries can offer you all sorts of preparation materials.

In your area, you surely can also find a good class that offers preparation free of charge (check the list of city areas above). Online programs can also be a good alternative. Come to the exam well prepared, complete and pass the exam, and get your diploma.

HiSET Scoring

To pass the HiSET, you are required to attain a score of at least 8 (out of 20) on each of the five subtests, a minimum overall score of 45, and no less than a 2-score for your essay. So, if you just score the minimally required score in each subtest, you won’t pass.

GED Scoring

GED scoring occurs on a scoring scale from 100 to 200, with a passing score of 145.

  • 100-144: below passing
  • 145-164: high school equivalency
  • 165-174: college-ready
  • 175-200 college-ready + college credit

Students wishing to earn their high school equivalency diploma can follow GED or HiSET instruction courses that community education centers provide or benefit from this website’s free support services, such as free practice tests and amazing video lessons. There’s no need to submit an email address; just start learning! If you like our free support, you can register for Onsego’s full GED or HiSET prep course.

Your Future

Over the past few years, we have seen an enormous increase in new jobs in Louisiana in the professional sectors of Health Care, Construction, and Finance, and most of these new positions were entry-level jobs that called for secondary education. Regardless of the new job you would like to get, completion of a secondary school credential will be very useful for your professional development.

If you prepare online, you don’t need to schedule specific learning hours; you can do so whenever you like, but mind you, self-discipline is required! If you study regularly, you can get the required knowledge and skills well within a year. So, before you know it, you can schedule and plan your test! Just click on the related links on this website and view if online learning might be right for you or if a classroom with a teacher is better for you. Please note that the free video lessons and practice tests cover just portions of the GED curriculum and are part of the extensive prep course developed by ONSEGO.

Attending HiSET or GED prep classes will be the first and crucial step to a better future, and by the time you acquire your GED or HiSET diploma, you can move forward in your career and your life. The diploma allows for a college education, and if you want to study for a technical degree, your future will be bright. Check with your preferred academic institution about their financial help policies and see if any grants are offered.

When you’ve passed the HiSET or GED exam, you will receive your high school equivalency diploma, and your test results will be sent upon request. Your degree will get you a job and maybe even at the business you like.

Upon completing the HiSET or GED exam, you will be awarded the HSE (High School Equivalency) Diploma. This document is nationally accepted as the equivalent of a regular high school diploma by government agencies, employers, recruiters, and universities. Listed in this post are also all locations in Louisiana where HiSET or GED prep classes are available.

FAQ about GED in Louisiana

How to get a GED in Louisiana?

Louisiana uses the HiSET and GED exams for its HSE (high school equivalency) testing program. So, to earn your HSE diploma in Louisiana, you’ll have to pass the four sub-exams that are included in the GED test or the five subtests that make up the HiSET exam. The five tests cover Mathematics, Language Reading, Language Writing, Science, and Social Studies. The GED test has four sub-exams as the reading and writing portions are now in one Language Arts subtest.

What are the Louisiana GED testing requirements?

The HiSET exam, just like the GED, is only open to adults who don’t hold a high school diploma. The minimum required age to qualify in Louisiana is 16, but some pretty strict extra requirements apply for students 16, 17, and 18 years old. There’s no state residency requirement in Louisiana, but test-takers must first attain sufficient scores on the HiSET Official Practice Test or the GED Ready practice test.

What is the GED cost in Louisiana?

The Louisiana HiSET exam costs $83.75 (when taken on a computer) or $95 (when taken on paper) for the entire exam, regardless of whether you take the assessment at a testing center or online. You can, however, register and pay for one of the five HiSET subtests at a time.

The Louisiana GED test costs $36 per subtest, so $144 overall. This is the price for both online and on-site testing, but to qualify for online GED testing, you must first attain passing results on four GED Ready tests, which will set you back $28 in total as well.
