The HSE diploma will lead to better career options, and it allows for higher education. The HiSET exam consists of five modular, independent sub-exams that measure a student’s knowledge level in these subject areas:

  • Mathematics
  • Social Studies
  • Science

Not everybody qualifies for the program. You must not have a high school diploma or be signed up for another school program.

Online Proctored HiSET Exam

There is now also the option to take the HiSET exam online for qualifying students, though Maine does not offer this option. It used to be that to earn a high school equivalency diploma in Maine, your personal appearance at an official testing site was required, but that has changed in many states, not in Maine. The online HiSET test is called the HiSET-Exam-At-Home.

HiSET Scoring

Getting the diploma will improve job options and open up doors for a college education. You are required to meet these three passing standards if you want to be successful on the HiSET.

First, your score needs to be 8 out of 20 on each one of the five subtests (Science-Social Studies-Reading-Writing-Math); second, your essay result must be at least 2 (out of maximally 6); and your total testing result cannot be less than 45 out of a possible 100.

To summarize: For over 70 years, the GED test had been more or less synonymous with high school equivalency testing in Maine, but that changed a few years back.

The state of Maine is using the HiSET test (designed by Educational Testing Services) for its High School Equivalency Test. Maine residents don’t need to pay for the HiSET test. It’s offered free of charge, and after obtaining your HiSET, the first two years of college are free as well! Read more here.

FAQ about GED in Maine

How to get a GED in Maine?

Maine is using the HiSET exam for high school equivalency (HSE) testing instead of the GED exam. To acquire your HSE credential in Maine, you must pass the five subtests that the HiSET exam is made up of. The five subtests cover Language Reading, Language Writing, Math, Social Studies, and Science. The free practice tests and video lessons on this website are part of Onsego GED Prep, a full and accredited prep course.

What are the Maine GED testing requirements?

HiSET testing (just like the GED exam) is for adults who have never completed high school. The minimum age for HiSET testing in Maine is 17, but 17-year-olds must meet pretty strict additional criteria. State residency is required to take the test for free, but non-residents may also take the test. All applicants must attain passing scores on the Official HiSET Practice Test.

What is the GED cost in Maine?

For state residents, HiSET testing is free in Maine. Non-residents can also take the HiSET exam here, but they’ll have to pay $45 for each of the five HiSET subtests. Non-residents will also receive two free retests, but a $15 test center fee applies at all times. Residents can take retests at no charge.
