This article lists all high school equivalency prep sites and testing centers in the Merced area. California uses two options for this purpose: the GED and HiSET exams.
Both the HiSET and the GED can be taken online or at a state-approved test center. Read more below.
Online GED Classes
A simple and easy way of getting your GED diploma.
Learn fast, stay motivated, and pass your GED quickly.
The exams give adults who were not in a position to complete high school the opportunity to earn an equivalent degree.
Both alternatives measure skills and knowledge at a level that compares to that of high school graduates.
The GED® (General Education Development) test is a series of four independent subtests in
- Language Arts
- Math
- Science
- Social Studies
The HiSET® exam contains five subtests. Here, the section Literacy comes with separate writing and reading tests.
You can take one of the four GED or five HiSET subtests (modules) at a time and in the order you wish.
Go to our page “GED In California” to read all about eligibility criteria and testing fees.

Online GED, HiSET Testing
Online GED or HiSET testing was no option. You needed to come to a state-approved testing site and take the exam in person, but fortunately, that is changing. The GED and HiSET exams are now also offered in an online version. If you want to learn more, check out online HiSET testing, and for online GED testing, <- check here.
For Who is the GED?
The GED and HiSET exams are for adults who left high school prematurely, and students who pass one of the tests have demonstrated that they can function independently in college and the workplace.
Holding the High School Equivalency diploma will certainly result in better employment options, and it opens the doors to schools of higher education.
HiSET
The HiSET exam contains five tests (two Language tests, one on writing and one on reading) and is available in a paper-based version and on a computer. Testing centers decide which exam(s) they use, so learn about the options in a test center near you.
