So in Indiana, you can now take and pass the GED or HiSET exam to earn your High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma.
The HiSET® and GED® exams offer individuals who did not complete high school the chance to acquire an equivalent degree.
The HiSET exam includes five subject tests in
- Math
- English Reading
- English Writing
- Science
- Social Studies
The GED test combines English Reading and English Writing into one single English Language subtest, so there are four GED sub-exams.
HiSET and GED testing can be done one subtest at a time if you wish. The HiSET is available on a computer or on paper, while the GED is offered exclusively on a computer.

GED Scoring
The four GED modules (independent sub-exams) are scored on a 100-200 scale where the passing score is 145 points.
- Results in the 145-174 range indicate high school equivalency
- 165-174 scores indicate college readiness
- 175-200 results will additionally yield up to ten college credit hours
HiSET Scoring
Your results on the five HiSET modules (independent subtests) are measured on a scoring scale that runs from 0 to 20. The passing score on each module is 8, and your overall score must be in the 45-100 range. Additionally, you’ll have to attain at least a 2 out of a possible 6 score on your essay.

People who didn’t complete their high school education are faced with limited choices when it comes to career development, continuing education, and income potential. Even those with drive and lots of talent will face limited opportunities since today, just about every job opening, also at the entry level, requires at least a high school or equivalent degree.
The fact of the matter is that workers with a secondary education credential (high school or equivalent diploma) will earn at least $ 9,600 more annually than workers who do not have that education level. So it really pays off to get your GED or HiSET diploma, right?
