The HiSET exam includes five subtests in the fields of

GED Requirements in Montana

• The state of Montana requires GED or HiSET test-takers to be at least 16 years old.
• Applicants 16, 17, or 18 years of age, however, must meet specific additional criteria.
• Underage test-takers must, for example, be officially withdrawn from school and have parental consent. Please see your nearest testing site as there are more requirements.
• Test-takers cannot already have a high school or equivalent diploma
• They can also not be enrolled in another school program.
• The Montana HiSET exam is only open to state residents.
• There is no requirement in Montana to first take a prep course or practice test, unless you take the exam online.

Montana GED and HiSET Online

The Montana HiSET test comes with five independent sub-exams (modules) that are available in paper-based and computer-based formats.

The exam can be taken at state-designated test centers or in an online proctored format, the “HiSET-At-Home” exam. To qualify for online testing, applicants must first reach passing scores on the HiSET Official Practice Test.

HiSET Cost in Montana

The Montana HiSET exam costs $78.75 (on a computer) or $100 (on paper) for the full exam (five sub-exams).

Each of the five HiSET subtests, when computer-based, costs $15.75 ($10.75 for ETS and $5 for the test center).
When taken in a paper-based format, each subtest costs $20 ($15 for ETS and $5 for the test center).

Keep in mind that you can take (and pay for) the five sub-exams one or more at a time and in any order. When a testing center has availability, you may take all five subject tests in one day, but you may also schedule them across several days.

GED Cost in Montana

The Montana GED test costs $144 for the entire GED battery or $36 per individual subtest. To be able to write the exam inline, however, you’ll first have to reach sufficient scores (in the “green” zone) on four GED Ready practice tests, which will set you back an additional $28 since these practice tests cost $6.99 each.

HiSET, GED Registration

Students can register, schedule, and pay for the tests at HiSET.org, and they must bring proper identification upon testing. Applicants who are 16, 17, or 18 years old must meet strict regulations; they need, for example, to bring an official Withdrawal Form from the school they last attended, and 16-year-olds must also have an age waiver.

To register for the GED test, candidates must set up their account on the website GED.com.

What’s on the GED and HiSET Exam?

The HiSET is a 5-test timed exam that can be taken at an official state-approved testing site or online. The five subject fields that make up the HiSET exam are

• English Language Writing

• Social Studies
• Science

Both the five HiSET sub-exams and the four GED subtests measure a student’s skills and academic knowledge of subjects taught in four years of high school. The GED and HiSET exams are available in English and Spanish.

On the GED exam, the writing and reading sub-exams were combined into one Reading through Language Arts sub-exam, so there are four GED modules.

HiSET and GED Scoring

HiSET scoring takes place on a scale from 0 to 20. The passing score is 8 on each of the 5 subtests, your total testing result must be no less than 45 (out of 100), and your essay score must be at least 2 (out of 6). As said before, there’s no need to take all five HiSET or four GED subtests in one session. You have the freedom to take one test at a time if you wish.

GED scoring takes place on a score chart from 100 to 200.

• The GED passing score on each sub-exam is 145
• Results in the 145-164 range indicate high school equivalency
• Results in the 165-174 range indicate college readiness
• Results in the 175-200 will additionally bring up to ten college credit hours, but that depends on the school and the subject

The High School Equivalency (HSE) testing program is developed for adults who don’t have a high school diploma and gives them one more chance to earn an equivalent diploma. Acquiring your HSE diploma will definitely improve your job prospects and clear the way into college.

In order to sit for the test, you had to appear at one of Montana’s official testing sites. The HiSET, just like the GED test, was not offered via the Internet, but today, that has changed with the introduction of the HiSET-At-Home test and the OP (Online Proctored) GED exam.
