The GED and HiSET exams are available online and at certified California testing centers.

The exams provide persons who didn’t complete high school with the opportunity to earn an equivalent degree. Both tests assess skills and knowledge at a level that’s comparable to that of graduating high school students.

The GED® is completely computer-based, whereas the HiSET® exam is available in paper-and-pencil and computerized versions.

There are four separate GED modules (subtests) measuring a student’s proficiency in these academic areas:

  • Math
  • Science
  • English Language
  • Social Studies

These four sub-exams are independent modules that may be completed one at a time and in any order.

Online Proctored GED and HiSET Testing

Both HSE exams that are used in California can be taken online as well. Until recently, online HSE testing was not an option. You needed to show up at a state-approved testing center and take the exam in person. But now, that has changed.

Both the GED and HiSET are now also available in an online proctored format. An online proctor will oversee your test-taking activities. You can learn more here: online proctored HiSET testing, and for the online GED test, <- check here.

What is the HSE Test?

The HSE (high school equivalency) Test is an exam that, upon successful completion, leads to a diploma that’s equivalent to a regular high school diploma. The General Education Development (GED) exam is a set of four independent tests that allow you to show that you have competencies that are comparable to those who have a high school degree.

The HiSET exam offers that same chance but comes with five tests because they include two literacy tests (one on writing, one on reading), while the GED has one Literacy test.

Hundreds of thousands of men and women take on the GED or HiSET exam each year because they would like to improve their job options or get access to a college education. Candidates who successfully complete the test will be honored with the California High School Equivalency Certificate, which is nationally recognized by colleges, employers, and government agencies.

The passing score on the GED modules is 145, so you need to get to at least 580 overall. The HiSET passing score is 8 (out of 20) on each subject test, your essay must be 2 points or higher, and the total score must be 45 or higher, excluding your essay result.
