Both exams measure proficiency at the same level that may be expected of HS seniors upon graduation.

  • Language
  • Social Studies
  • Math

You can take one of the four GED subtests at a time. You don’t have to complete the entire GED battery in one take.

The HiSET® (High School Equivalency Test) has individual Writing and Reading tests, so five in total, that may also be taken independently.

Online Proctored HiSET and GED Testing

Until recently, taking the HiSET or GED test over the Internet was not possible. It simply wasn’t available online. If you were looking to earn your high school equivalency diploma, appearing at one of Illinois’ state-designated testing sites was required.

That had changed, though. The GED and HiSET exams are now offered in an online version as well. To read more, check out the following articles: ‘The Online GED Test’ and for the online HiSET exam, ‘The HiSET-At-Home Test.’

GED Eligibility Criteria

In the state of Illinois, applicants can sit for the GED or HiSET exam if they are at least 17 years old, don’t have a secondary education credential, and have lived in Illinois for no less than thirty days.

In case an individual is 16, he/she must present a withdrawal letter from the last school he/she was registered. Applicants must not already hold a secondary education credential.

Illinois also requires test-takers to pass the state’s Constitution Test. Illinois gives successful GED and HiSET testers a high school diploma and the GED is offered at no cost as well!
