New Jersey GED Cost

The GED exam has four individual subtests (or modules) that cost $36 each ($144 in total) if you take them at a test center. When taken online, the subtests are also $36 each ($144 overall), but you’ll have to reach passing scores on four GED Ready tests first, and that’s another $28 in costs.

There’s one GED Ready test for each of the four subtests. You can buy the GED Ready test on the website GED.com, and they are $6.99 each.

There is no waiting period in New Jersey if you fail a subtest and want to retry. If you’ve failed a subtest three times, however, you’ll need to wait for 60 days before you can try again.

New Jersey HiSET Cost

In New Jersey, each of the computer-based HiSET tests costs $20.75 ($10.75 for the ETS fee and $10 for the test center), so $103.75 overall.

The paper-delivered HiSET exam is not available in New Jersey.
You have two retests for each subject, but the $10 test center fee is due at all times you take a retest.

Online GED and HiSET Testing

So, the GED and HiSET exams can now be taken in an online format as well. For information about the online HiSET test, check out this post -> Online HiSET testing.

GED Scoring

It is the mission of testing centers to assess the academic skills of test-takers and to provide them with information for appropriate placement and advising. By doing this, they will enhance the students’ opportunities to achieve academic success in college and enhance their employment options.

The GED is measured on a scale that runs from 100 to 200. On each of the four GED subtests (Math, Literacy, Social Studies, Science), you need to get a score of at least 145.

  • Below passing score: 100-144
  • Passing score: 145-164 (high school equivalency)
  • College-ready score: 165-174
  • College-ready Plus college credit score: 175-200

HiSET Scoring

The HiSET passing criteria are that you score at least 8 (out of 20) on each of the 5 sub-tests, score at least 2 out of 6 points on your essay, and achieve no less than 45 (out of 100) overall, excluding your essay result.

This proves that the NJ GED program provides the best appreciated and most popular alternative to a regular high school diploma.

On January 1, 2014, New Jersey changed the system for the state’s high school equivalency testing. New Jersey has decided to use multiple tests for people who want to earn a state-issued equivalency to a high school diploma. Each individual testing center determines which test(s) to offer in that center.

Computer-Based Testing Only

In New Jersey, high school equivalency testing is only possible on a computer; no more paper-based testing! Only applicants who need special accommodation (for example, a medical reason) can take the exam in a paper-based format. State officials say New Jersey was the first state to make the switch to computer-based testing entirely.

Most of the time, it’s better if you would take a pre-test to discover your weak and strong points. When you are well prepared, you can take the High School Equivalency exam at one of the official testing sites in New Jersey.

After passing the exam, you will be awarded the HSE certificate or diploma. The NJ GED exam includes four tests that cover these subject areas: Literacy, Social Studies, Science, and Math.

The HiSET exam has five tests, as the Literacy section is split up into separate writing and reading tests. In New Jersey, the GED modules may be taken separately. This is also the case with the HiSET exam.
