The exams give adults who didn’t finish high school another shot at acquiring an equivalent diploma.

The GED has four subtests that measure a candidate’s knowledge of the subjects:

  • Science (incl. Physics & Chemistry)
  • Social Studies (incl. Biology & Geography)
  • Mathematics
  • English Language Literacy

The sub-exams may be dealt with separately and in your preferred order.

The GED is fully computer-based, whereas the HiSET exam is available both on paper and on computer.

How to get all set for the GED exam fast

Online GED and HiSET exams

Both the HiSET and GED are now also available in an online proctored format. Online HSE testing was, until recently, not possible. You needed to show up at one of California’s state-approved testing sites and sit for the exams in person. Fortunately, that has now changed.

When you take the GED or HiSET exam online, a proctor will monitor all activities to guarantee that everything goes according to strict regulations. To learn more, visit ‘The online HiSET test, and for taking the ‘GED test online,’ <- check here.

Four GED tests

Multiple-choice questions are mostly a thing of the past, and essay questions are in. Your writing skills will have to be up to par, as well as your ability to think critically. The essay questions also test your knowledge of social studies. The goal of the exam is to be sure you are well-rounded for modern workplace requirements and able to deal with real-life situations.

HiSET and GED

So, in California, there are two alternatives for high school equivalency testing: the GED and HiSET exams. The HiSET has five testing subject areas (literacy is split up into reading and writing tests) and is offered in both a computer-based and a paper-based version. The GED is fully computer-formatted.

To pass the HiSET (short for High School Equivalency Test), you must come to a score of 8 (out of 20) on each of the five tests, have no less than 2 points for your essay, and score between 45 and 100 overall.

On the GED (General Education Development), you need to attain at least a 145 score on each subtest. These sub-exams are calibrated on a 100 to 200 scoring scale. 145-164 are high school equivalent results; 165-174 are college-ready scores; 175-200 are college-ready + credit scores.
