Online GED Classes
A simple and easy way of getting your GED diploma.
Learn fast, stay motivated, and pass your GED quickly.
Both tests are available online and at state-certified testing facilities. Check below to learn more about taking the online GED® and HiSET® exams.
The exams give persons who quit high school before graduation the opportunity to earn an equivalent degree. Both options measure knowledge at a level that compares to that of a graduating HS senior.
The GED exam has four individual modules (or subtests) that cover the fields of
- English Language Arts
- Mathematics
- Science
- Social Studies
The four GED subtests don’t need to be completed in one take. You can take these modules when you’re ready to do so.
The HiSET exam has five subtests, as the Language section consists of separate writing and reading tests. The HiSET modules may also be taken individually.

Online GED, HiSET Tests Introduced
In the past, taking the GED or HiSET exam online was not an option. The tests were just not offered over the Internet. If you wanted to get hold of your GED diploma, you had to show up at one of Illinois’ state-approved GED or HiSET test centers and sit for the exams in person.
Fortunately, that has now changed. Both the GED and the HiSET exams introduced online versions that work with online proctors. For more detailed information, check out the following articles: The online GED test and the online HiSET-At-Home exam.
GED, HiSET Passing Score
The GED passing score is 145 on each test. The tests are scored on a 100-200 scale.
- 100-144: below-passing scores
- 145-164: high school equivalent scores
- 165-174: college-ready scores
- 175-200: college-ready PLUS college credit scores (up to 10, depending on the university or college)
The passing score for each HiSET subtest is 8 out of 20. Your total score must be at least 45, while your essay must have a score of no less than 2 out of 6.
GED Registration
The GED program is developed by GED Testing Service, a cooperation between the non-profit organization ACE (the American Council on Education) and the world’s largest educational assessment-developing for-profit company, Pearson.
Go to the GED organization’s website, GED.com, to learn everything regarding the GED program. You will be asked to set up your account for registration and scheduling your exams, and here, you will also find a wealth of information on the employment market and job options or on universities and colleges and their academic programs.
Illinois awards High School Diplomas to GED and HiSET Graduates
HiSET and GED graduates can exchange their GED or HiSET diplomas for State of Illinois High School Diplomas. They should bring ten dollars to their Regional Office of Education to be able to do so. The degrees are available at Ottawa’s ROE. However, old high school equivalency diplomas remain valid. LaSalle County residents can call the ROE office at 815-434-0780 to schedule an appointment or for more information.
