The HiSET® and GED® tests are geared towards adults who left high school prematurely and offer the chance to earn an equivalent degree.
The GED (General Education Development) exam is fully computerized and has four separate subject tests.
These subtests are assessing a candidate’s proficiency in these academic subject areas:
- Language Arts
- Mathematics
- Social Studies
- Science
The GED exam is modular. You can take the four sub-exams separately and in the order you want.
The HiSET exam includes five tests as the Language section is divided into separate reading and writing tests.

Who is the GED Exam for?
The GED (General Education Development) exam was created to support adults who don’t have a high school diploma. The diploma that you’ll be given after successfully completing the computer-based GED test is approved as equivalent to a high school diploma by government institutions, universities, and businesses all across the U.S.
What is the GED Exam?
The GED exam is a series of four tests confirming that individuals who pass the exam have knowledge and skills at the level of high school graduates, and since its inception in the 1940s, over 19 million adults have been taking the GED exam.
Holders of the GED diploma have demonstrated that they command knowledge and skills at a level that compares to what high school seniors must command upon graduation. For eligibility criteria, check out this post: GED testing in California.
How to stay perfectly motivatedOnline GED and HiSET Options
Both HSE options that are available in California, the GED and HiSET, can now be taken online as well. Until recently, taking the GED or HiSET online was not an option. It simply wasn’t available. You were required to come to an official test center in person.
That has changed now. The GED and HiSET tests are now also available in a proctored online format. You can read more about this development here: The online proctored HiSET test, and for the GED, go to The online proctored GED exam.
What Motivates People to Get a GED?
There is something that motivates people to enroll in HSE (high school equivalency) classes. Is it that the HSE diploma opens the door to new opportunities in your career? Could the reason be that the HSE diploma allows you to pursue higher education? It could be.
When it comes to choosing a career, you should be careful to weigh your options. This decision is always a tough one. All young people have many options to choose from, but so does everyone else. It doesn’t matter how old you are; what matters is that you make a smart career choice.
The secret is simple in this case: find a career that makes you happy and allows you to realize your full potential. For a start, identify an occupation that you are good at. If you have no idea as to how you should even begin, ask the people around you about activities that you are good at.
Factor in your hobbies and interests, and you’ll be good to go. Once you have acquired your GED diploma, the world opens up for you. You can change careers regardless of how long you have been working at your current job.
