The GED® is geared towards adults without a high school diploma and gives them the opportunity to earn an equivalent degree.

The tests are at a level that compares to that of graduating high school seniors.

There are four separate GED subtests (or modules) in

  • Science, including Chemistry, The Scientific Method, Physics
  • English Language Literacy, Reading & Writing combined
  • Mathematics
  • Social Studies, including History, Government, Geography

These subtests may be taken separately. There’s no need to prepare and sit for the entire GED battery in one session.

Until recently, online GED testing was not possible. You needed to report, in person, to one of Maryland’s official GED test sites. Now, with the arrival of an online GED testing option, that has all changed.

The Online GED Testing Option

To take the four GED subtests, there was, until recently, no option via the Internet. If you wanted to earn your Maryland GED credential, you had to come personally to one of Maryland’s state-designated GED testing facilities.

Now, all of that changed with the introduction of the GED exam in an online format. You’ll need to have a reliable Internet connection, and then an online proctor will oversee your activities and check whether you do it all in line with the rules. Check out this page: ‘Online GED test’ for more information.

Your Future

The GED passing score is 145 on a 100-200 measuring scale. There is no averaging possibility, so the overall minimally required score is 580 points.

In Maryland, the GED will set you back just $57 for the entire exam as the state subsidizes GED testing, but this only applies to first-time GED test-takers. The regular Maryland GED testing fee is $144 for the full exam or $36 for each subtest. Testing is only available to state residents. If you want to see if you qualify for the GED exam, check out ‘GED testing requirements in Maryland.’

The GED (General Educational Development) test has drastically reduced the number of multiple-choice questions, and you need to answer the questions more in an essay style.

There are four separate tests that you can take individually in the academic fields of Literacy (Reasoning through Language Arts), Math (Mathematical Reasoning), Science, and Social Studies.

Not only has the format changed. The GED is now entirely in line with the Common Core Educational Standards that have been implemented by most states.

The GED is modular, meaning that you can now take and also pay for the four tests one by one at the moment you feel sufficiently prepared. You don’t need to sit for the entire GED battery in one take.

All across America, the GED credential is recognized and accepted just like a regular high school diploma by employers, institutions of higher education, and government agencies.

Not having a high school diploma can have many causes, and the GED track offers a great and important way to receive a diploma that can be used in the same way. The GED testing criteria are set in a way that 40 percent of high school graduates would not pass the test.

Maryland GED Test Cost

The Maryland GED exam costs $144 for the entire exam or $36 per sub-exam. First-time testers, however, need to pay only 14.25 per subtest ($57 for the full battery) because the state subsidizes $21.75 per sub-exam. GED applicants can register and pay for one GED subtest at a time.

The subsidized $14.25 rate for 1st-time GED testers applies to both online and on-site testing. To take advantage of this discounted rate, first-time GED testers must use the code MDGED2175 upon checkout when registering for the exam. Maryland is not subsidizing retests. To register and pay for the exam (one module at a time if preferred), you must set up an account with GED.com.
