The GED® and HiSET® exams offer adults who left high school before graduation another chance at securing an equivalent diploma.

Both tests assess knowledge at a level similar to what can be expected of high school seniors upon graduation.

You may well prepare for the exams at one of the facilities listed below, but online preparation is a good option as well if you use the GED course designed by Onsego GED Prep, an engaging program that GED Testing Service describes as “100% aligned with the GED exam.”

The GED has four subtests (independent modules) that assess a candidate’s academic proficiency in these content areas:

  • Reasoning through Language Arts (reading and writing combined)
  • Mathematical Reasoning
  • Science (incl. Physics and Chemistry)
  • Social Studies (incl. Geography and Biology)

You can write these modules individually and in the order you prefer.

The HiSET includes five tests (separate writing and reading tests) that can be taken individually as well.

GED and HiSET Exams Online

Students who want to acquire a California HSE (high school equivalency) diploma can now also take the HiSET or GED exam online. It used to be that online GED and HiSET testing was not an option. Test-takers had to appear personally at one of California’s designated test centers and sit for one of the exams in person.

Well, that has changed. The GED and HiSET tests are now also offered in an online, proctored format. You can read more about this development here: ‘The online HiSET test,’ and for the GED exam, check out this post -> ‘The online proctored GED exam.’

GED, HiSET Passing Scores

The GED exam comes with a passing scale that goes from 100 to 200. You need to get a score of at least 145 points for each of the four separate tests, so no less than 580 in total. The four GED scoring ranges are:

  • Below passing: 100-144
  • High school equivalency: 145-164
  • College-ready: 165-174
  • College-ready plus credit: 175-200

The HiSET exam includes five testing subjects (literacy is divided into writing and reading sections) that can be taken on a computer or in a paper-based version. Testing centers can decide which one (or both) of the systems they will use.

To pass the HiSET exam, you need to score between 8 and 20 points on each of the five tests. Your essay result must be in the 2-6 points range, and your overall score cannot be under 45 points, excluding your essay. To get optimally prepared fast, check out the page about GED and HiSET video lessons.
