Online GED and HiSET Testing Options

GED and HiSET test-takers can now also sit for the exams online from the comfort of their homes. Until recently, online GED or HiSET testing was not an option. It used to be that if you wanted to earn the credential, your personal appearance at an official testing site was needed.

But that has changed! GED or HiSET testing is now also offered online in a proctored format. To read more about these options, check out the following posts: online GED testing to learn more about online GED testing and online HiSET testing for information about taking the HiSET exam online.

GED and HiSET

The GED exam includes four tests in these academic subjects: Literacy, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Besides the GED, California residents can also take the alternative HiSET exam, but testing sites decide which exam(s) they are using, so contact a test center close to you. The HSE (high school equivalency) diploma is accepted by practically all U.S. schools and employers.

GED Diploma Benefits

The GED program has been used for more than seven decades to assess a test-taker’s knowledge and skills at the level that can be expected of high school seniors. The GED diploma is necessary to get into higher education, get a decent job, and qualify for job promotions.

The GED exam is available in English and Spanish. The GED (General Education Development) examination is a nationally recognized set of four tests created to assess the skills and concepts typically learned during a regular four-year high school education.

Practically all employers, community colleges, and universities accept the GED certificate in lieu of a high school credential.

Passing Scores

To pass the GED exam, candidates must at least achieve a passing score of 145 points on each of the four GED independent modules. GED results are calibrated on a 100 to 200 scale. There are four GED scoring ranges:

  • Below Passing: 100-144
  • High School Equivalency: 145-164
  • College-Ready: 165-174
  • College-Ready + Credit: 175-200

The HiSET passing score on each of the five modules is 8. Your results are calibrated on a scale from 0 to 20, so 8 is the passing score. Your total score must be in the 45-100 range, while your essay must have at least a 2 out of 6 score.
