Both the HiSET® and GED® can be taken online or at an official California HSE test facility. You can learn more about online testing below.

The exams assess competencies and proficiency at a level that may be expected of graduating HS students.

The GED is fully computer-based, whereas the HiSET is offered in both paper- and computer-based versions.

The GED test comes with four individual modules, or subtests, in Science, Social Studies, Math, and Literacy that may be taken separately.

HiSET testing happens via five tests (individual reading and writing tests) that can be taken separately as well.

Online proctored HiSET and GED testing

The GED and HiSET exams can now be taken online as well. It used to be that online GED and HiSET testing over the internet was not possible and that test-takers were required to come to a state-recognized test center in person.

Well, that has now completely changed with the arrival of online proctored GED and HiSET test-taking options. For more information about taking the GED exam online, check out The online GED exam, and for more HiSET information, go to The online HiSET test.
