The state of New Jersey now uses the GED® and HiSET® exams for HSE (high school equivalency) testing, but not all testing centers administer both options. In New Jersey, both exams can be taken on a computer online or at a test center, and there’s no paper-based testing in the state. More New Jersey GED information <- can be found here.

  • West Virginia

West Virginia now uses both the GED and HiSET. Testing was and is free, and state residency is required. So, there are two available options in West Virginia. The West Virginia HSE exams must be taken at certified test centers and on a computer. There’s no paper-based testing possibility in West Virginia.

  • New York State

New York State used the TASC exam for its high school equivalency (HSE) program from 2014 through 2021. HSE testing is free in the state but only available to state residents. The GED exam is fully computer-based. More information can be found on our page, The New York GED Test.
