  • Test-takers 17 years of age, however, need to meet strict additional requirements.
  • Under-age HiSET test-takers must, for example, submit an age waiver that’s signed by an official of the school they last attended.
  • They also need to hold written permission from a parent or guardian. Please get in touch with a test center for details.
  • Test-takers cannot hold a high school or equivalent diploma.
  • They can also not be registered for another education program.

Online HiSET Testing

The HiSET exam, like the GED®, is now available in an online format as well. Until recently, the exam had to be taken in person at an official testing center, but that’s changed. You can read more in this article: Online Proctored HiSET exam.

HiSET Cost and Retesting

There are five individual HiSET subtests; each subtest costs as follows:

  • In a computer-delivered format, $15.75 per subtest ($10.75 for ETS and $5 for the test center fee). So, in total, $78.75
  • In a paper-delivered format, $20 per subtest ($15 for ETS and $5 for the test center fee). So, in total, $100

You’ll have two retests per subtest at a discounted rate of $5 for the test center fee. This offer is valid for a 12-month period. Thereafter, regular fees apply again.

HiSET Scoring

To pass the HiSET exam, you need to attain a score of at least 8 (out of a possible 20) on each of the five subtests (Math, Language Writing, Language Reading, Social Studies, and Science). On the essay part, you need to score at least 2 out of 6, and your total score (across all five subtests) must not be lower than 45 points (out of a possible 100), not including your essay score.

HiSET Testing

The TDLWD (Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development) decided that the HiSET is the only high school equivalency exam used in the state. All over Tennessee, you can find many facilities that provide HiSET prep classes to get you all set to take the HiSET successfully.

All Tennessee Technology Centers and vocational/technical schools offer HiSET prep classes, and many more adult education centers are listed in the directory above. Once you’re ready, schedule your test and see your opportunities.

Get in touch with a HiSET prep facility near you and see if you qualify for the high school equivalency program. Not everybody qualifies: you cannot have a high school diploma or be enrolled in a school program. Become aware of requirements and regulations, and get optimally prepared.

Community libraries and bookstores can supply a lot of study material, and you can find good online programs as well. There are numerous locations where HiSET prep classes are available, mostly totally free of charge (see the above listing of major city areas), and in combination with a top-notch online prep course, you’ll get all set in no time.

Free GED (HiSET) Online Prep in Tennessee

Our free online classes and GED practice tests allow you to discover if this online study method is a good fit for you. If so, you can sign up for Onsego GED prep, a comprehensive, accredited GED prep program that has provided the free resources offered on this website.

How to Prepare for the HiSET Exam

When preparing for the HiSET or GED® exam, you should take a pre-test to discover your weak and strong points. This way, you learn which areas need your most attention.

The exam comes with five tests that include predominantly multiple-choice questions (only the writing section does not). Discover strategies that will help you in giving the correct answers. By learning this way, you will become confident, and your scores will improve. Your diploma will get you into college, will get you better job opportunities, and will lead to better financial and overall health.

When you hold the Tennessee high school equivalency diploma, you may apply for a better job, and you also qualify for a college education. Just register for a prep class at one of the above-listed facilities or follow the Onsego GED Prep, a premium course recognized by GED Testing Service. When applying to college, also request info about financial support and learn about application and admissions policies.

Promise Scholarship

In Tennessee, qualifying students who graduated high school, are homeschooled, or have earned a GED/HISET diploma before they turn 19 can receive the Promise Scholarship towards a post-secondary educational institution for mandatory fees and tuition. Applicants must be full-time students, take part in mentoring programs, attend regular meetings, and perform at least eight hours of community service.

To qualify, the applicants must be Tennessee residents, U.S. citizens, or eligible non-citizens. They must have completed a Tennessee Promise Scholarship Application Form in the TSAC Student Portal by November 1 and a FAFSA Form by March 1 (fafsa.gov).

FAQ about GED in Tennessee

How to get a GED in Tennessee?

Tennessee uses the HiSET exam for its high school equivalency program. If you want to earn your certificate in Tennessee, you’ll have to take and pass the five subtests included in the HiSET exam. The five subjects cover the content areas of Science, Writing, Reading, Social Studies, and Math.

What are the Tennessee GED testing requirements?

The HiSET test, just like the GED exam, is available to adult learners who never completed high school. To qualify, students must be at least 17 years old, though 17-year-olds qualify only if they meet specific extra criteria. State residency is not required, but all test-takers must attain sufficient scores on the Official HiSET Practice Test (OPT).

What is the GED cost in Tennessee?

The Tennessee HiSET test costs $78.75 for testers who take the computer-based version or $100 for testers who take the exam on paper. There is no need to take the entire HiSET battery in one take. You can register and pay for and take the five HiSET subtests one at a time.
