GED Classes Toms River, New Jersey

Last Updated on December 20, 2023.

Here we show you all GED preparatory class locations as well as testing sites in the Toms River area. In New Jersey, there are two options to take the high school equivalency test, the GED and HiSET.

The HiSET and GED exams may be taken online or at state-certified test centers. The TASC exam was discontinued.

The exams offer adults without a high school diploma the opportunity to acquire an equivalent degree.

The GED® exam has four separate modules or subtests in

  • Math
  • Social Studies
  • English Language Literacy
  • Science

These exams are independent modules that can be written separately and in any desired order.

The HiSET® exam has five tests that can be taken separately as well. Here, the section “Literacy” comes with individual Reading and Writing subtests.

It doesn’t matter when you left school

Testing takes place at a level similar to that of graduating high school seniors.

In the past, online high school equivalency (HSE) testing was not possible. Your personal appearance at a New Jersey state-designated testing site was required.

However, the launch of online proctored GED and HiSET testing options has changed all of that. Read more below at the bottom of this page.

Introducing Online GED and HiSET Options

Sitting for the HiSET or GED exam in an online format had, until recently, never been an option. HSE testing was simply not offered over the Internet. But now, with the introduction of online HiSET and GED testing options, that has all changed.

If you want to read all about the newly introduced HiSET-Exam-At-Home online testing option, check out this page: ‘The online HiSET test,’ and to learn more about the online proctored GED testing option, go to this page: ‘Welcoming the online GED test.’

Eligibility Requirements

In New Jersey, GED hopefuls must be at least 16 years of age to be able to sit for the GED or HiSET exam. However, when they meet some additional requirements, 16- and 17-year-olds may also be eligible.

Underage testers must submit a “Certificate of Consent,” a form that certifies that they’re not enrolled in any school, have permission to take the GED exam from their school districts, and demonstrate parental consent as well in writing, signed by a parent or legal guardian.

The parent or guardian must then accompany the underage test-taker to the test center with the completed “Certificate of Consent to Participate” form. Underage students who have a legal guardian are also required to bring a copy of the guardianship awarding court document.

The New Jersey equivalency exam is only available to state residents, and proof must be provided by photo identification. New Jersey does not require test-takers to attend a prep course prior to sitting for the exam, nor are they required to attain passing scores on the GED Ready® practice test to take the four-module GED exam at a test center. The modules can be taken separately, one at a time, if you prefer.
