The assessments offer adults without a high school diploma the opportunity to earn an equivalent degree.

The GED® test is fully computer-based and has four separate subtests, or modules, in

  • Science
  • Math
  • Language Arts
  • Social Studies

The HiSET® exam is offered both on paper and on a computer and includes five tests (Language has separate reading and writing tests).

The four GED modules may be taken separately, and that counts for the HiSET subtests as well.

Both tests assess knowledge at a level similar to what HS seniors are expected to master upon graduation.

Online GED and HiSET Exams

Both the GED and HiSET can now be taken in an online format as well. Until recently, if you wanted to earn a high school equivalency diploma, you had to come to an official test center and sit for the exam in person.

Now, that’s all changed! Both options are now offered online as well with the use of an online proctor. To read more, check out GED online proctored testing and for the HiSET: HiSET online proctored testing.

Passing Scores

GED results are calibrated on a 100-200 scale. To pass the GED exam, you need a minimum score of 145 on each one of the four tests. That’s the GED passing score. So, your overall score can never be under 580. There are four GED scoring ranges:

  • 100-144: below passing
  • 145-164: high school equivalency
  • 165-174: college-ready
  • 175-200: college-ready PLUS college credit

HiSET scores are calibrated on a score that runs from 0 to 20. On each module, you must reach at least a score of 8 to pass that subject. Additionally, your overall score must be at least 45, and your essay score at least 2 out of 6.

The GED and HiSET modules are independent sub-exams. You can write them individually and in any order you desire.

Over the years, more than 20 million adults have passed the GED exam or one of the alternatives, and the GED diploma is accepted by nearly all US colleges, universities, and employers. Recent studies show that people with a GED Diploma will make 43 percent more income than those without.

Every year, more than half a million adults earn their GED diploma, and famous GED graduates include Dave Thomas (founder of Wendy’s), Peter Jennings, and Michael J. Fox.
