The exam offers adults who quit high school prematurely the opportunity to earn a credential that’s equivalent to a common high school diploma.

The GED exam contains four individual subtests (modules) measuring a candidate’s academic knowledge in these subjects:

• English Language Arts
• Mathematics
• Science, incl. Physics and Chemistry
• Social Studies, incl. Geography and History

There’s no need to take all four GED subtests in one session. You have the liberty to take the four modules one at a time and in the order you prefer. The GED test assesses knowledge at a level comparable to that of high school seniors upon graduation.

GED Scoring

The GED exam is fully computer-based, and your results are scores on a scale from 100 to 200. To pass, you must attain at least a result of 145 on each subtest. The GED exam has four scoring ranges:

• 100-144: Below Passing Scores
• 145-164: High School Equivalency Scores
• 165-174: College-Ready Scores
• 175-200: College-Ready + College Credit Scores

Like just a small number of states, Washington, DC subsidizes GED testing. Students pay only $3.75 for each subtest or $15 for the entire battery when they write the exam at a test center. When taken online, the exam costs $36 per module, so $144 for the entire GED exam.

DC GED Testing Requirements

• In the District of Columbia, GED applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
• 16 and 17-year-old applicants may also qualify, however, if they meet some additional strict requirements. Please contact a GED testing site or a major prep facility near you to learn about the details.
• Underage GED testers must, for example, submit a parental consent letter and have been officially out of school for at least six months.
• In D.C., GED testing is only open to residents as the GED is heavily subsidized.
• Attending a prep course is not required, but taking the official GED Ready® practice test is. Test-takers must score in the “Likely to Pass” or “Too Close to Call” range before they’re allowed to sit for the official GED test.
• GED testers cannot be high school graduates and not be signed up for any other educational program.

The D.C. GED testing fee is $3.75 per subtest or $15 for the entire GED battery when taken at a test center (read more below).

DC GED Price and Retests

As said above, Washington DC subsidizes GED testing, and testing is only open to residents. The price of the four individual GED subtests is $3.75 each or $15 for the entire battery for students taking the exam at a testing facility. Online testing costs $36 per subtest (so $144 in total).

If you don’t pass a subtest, there’ll be a 30-day waiting period in the District of Columbia before you can take that subtest again, and this also counts for your second retake. If you need to retake that section for the third time, you’ll have to wait 60 days before you can try that subject test again.

Your first two retakes per subject field are free of charge, but after one year, the regular fees will apply again ($3.75 per individual module). This does NOT apply to online testing. Computer-Based GED Testing

The latest edition of the GED exam is totally computer-formatted; the paper-based version retired, and the level was raised, as was the price tag.
