It doesn’t matter when you left school.

The HiSET® exam, just like the GED®, offers adults who never finished high school the chance to earn an equivalent degree.

The HiSET contains five subtests in these academic fields: English writing, English reading, science, math, and social studies.

The HiSET exam is across America available both on-paper and on-computer, but in West Virginia, only computer-based testing is available.

The West Virginia HiSET exam is free and open to state residents only.

How long do you need to get your GED?

The HiSET exam

West Virginia stopped using the TASC for its High School Equivalency (HSE) testing program in 2021 and switched to the HiSET exam. The state pays for testing, as one of only a few states.

HiSET scoring

On the HiSET exam, you need to reach at least 8 out of a possible 20 points on each of the five subtests. Your overall score must be 45 or higher, and additionally, a 2-score or higher is required for your essay.

In 2014, West Virginia selected the TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion) examination as the state’s official high school equivalency testing alternative, but this program was discontinued in 2021. So West Virginia, where around 6,000 applicants are looking to obtain their high school equivalency credentials every year, opted for the HiSET exam.
