The HiSET® exam, just like the GED®, offers adults who never finished high school the chance to earn an equivalent degree.

The HiSET contains five subtests in these academic fields:

  • English writing
  • English reading
  • Science
  • Math
  • Social Studies

GED testing consists of four modular sub-exams as here, the Reading and Writing portions were merged into one “Reasoning through Language Arts” subtest.

In West Virginia, only computer-based testing is available for both exams. The West Virginia GED and HiSET testing is free and open to state residents only.

The GED and HiSET modules (independent sub-exams) can be taken online (by qualifying students only) and at official West Virginia test sites.

How long do you need to get your GED?

The HiSET Exam

West Virginia stopped using the TASC for its High School Equivalency (HSE) testing program in 2021 and switched to the HiSET exam. The state pays for testing (as one of only a few states).

HiSET Scoring

On the HiSET exam, you need to reach at least 8 out of a possible 20 points on each of the five subtests. Your overall score must be 45 or higher, and additionally, a 2-score or higher is required for your essay.

In 2014, West Virginia selected the TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion) examination as the state’s official high school equivalency testing alternative, but this program was discontinued in 2021. West Virginia, where around 6,000 applicants are looking to obtain their high school equivalency credentials every year, opted for the HiSET exam, and now, the GED was reintroduced again as well.

GED Scoring

On the four GED modules, you must reach a score of no less than 145 to pass that subject test. Scores in the 145-164 category are high school equivalent results, 165-174 category scores are college-ready results, and if you attain scores in the 175-200 range, you’ll also get college credit.
