The assessments give persons without a high school diploma one more option to earn a credential that is equivalent to a high school diploma.

The GED® includes four individual tests in math, social studies, literacy, and science that need to be dealt with separately.

The HiSET® exam has five subtests (individual Reading and Writing tests) that are available separately as well.

The HiSET is offered in both a paper-based and a computer-based format while the GED must be taken totally on a computer.

Online GED or HiSET testing was, until recently, never possible. Testing had to be done at an official North Carolina test center.

Launching online HiSET and GED exams

You never could take the HiSET or GED exam online. If you wanted to get hold of your North Carolina high school equivalency (HSE) credential, you were required to show up in person at an official North Carolina HSE testing center.

Now, with the launch of both GED and HiSET online testing options, that changed. If you want to get informed about the newly introduced GED online test-taking option, visit The online GED test, and to learn more about online HiSET testing, check out this page: Introducing the online HiSET exam.
